Innovative Practices Save Money, Help the Environment

This office supervises and directs the Parks and Buildings Division, the Roads Division, and the user-fee supported Sewer Division. The office staff lends support to all of the Divisions. Below you will find information on our various services to our public.

CONTAINER FACILITY

The Container Facility allows Montgomery Township residents to dispose of household items that are not recyclable, not hazardous waste and that cannot be collected by their trash hauler. A Montgomery Township Coupon is required of all Montgomery residents who wish to enter the facilit. Click on "container facility in left side menu above for further info.

RECYCLING

Public Works Director Art Villano serves as the Township Recycling Coordinator. Questions regarding recycling may also be addressed to the Somerset County Recycling Center at (732) 469-3363.

Bi-weekly Curbside Pick-up is provided by Somerset County. For the Curbside Pick-up Schedule and First Saturday Recycling and Electronics Drop-Off Schedules, plus rules on what and how to recycle, go to the Somerset County website's recycling page at www.co.somerset.nj.us/recycle.html.

Drop-Off Box for Recyclables at Montgomery Public Works Yard - For the convenience of our residents, Montgomery Township also provides a Recycling Drop-Off location for residents to dispose of their recyclables. The drop-off box is located at the Public Works yard, 12 Harlingen Road, Belle Mead, NJ 08502 between 8 am and 12 noon. The recyclable items are the same items (glass/plastics/cans/paper/cardboard etc) that are regularly picked up every other Friday by Somerset County Recycling. This opportunity is for recycling only – no trash will be accepted.  Proof of Montgomery Twp. residency is required for admission.

Business Waste Recycling Drop Off -

Recycling is a legal requirement for all business locations. Montgomery Business Recycling Ordinance

In Somerset County small businesses with between one and 50 employees are allowed to drop off materials at the Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., M-F.

The types of materials that will be accepted at the Recycling Center are newspapers; cardboard and chipboard; commingled containers, which include glass bottles, plastics bottles (marked with a #1 or #2), and steel, bi-metal and aluminum cans. Bring recyclable items in a cardboard box or bucket.

The following items will not be accepted: electronic waste, scrap metal, tires, plastic bags, chemicals or hazardous materials.

There will be no reimbursement for recyclable materials dropped off. For additional information, call the Somerset County Recycling Center at 732-469-3363.

Electronics Recycling - Somerset County offers drop-off of computers and electronics waste Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and first Saturdays of the month from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Newtech Recycling Inc., 600A Apgar Drive, Somerset, NJ 08873. Household Hazardous Waste - Somerset County sponsors disposal on specific dates at various locations. Call the County at (908) 231-7031 for further information. Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off days are listed in a publication found at http://www.co.somerset.nj.us/recycle.html

Paper Shredding - Operation Secure Shred events are held at various convenient locations and open to all residents of Somerset County. Please bring some form of identification which establishes your Somerset County residency. All paper paper documents and cardstock folders are acceptable.

PLEASE, NO MAGAZINES, NEWSPAPERS, JUNK MAIL, BULK RATE MAIL

It is not necessary to remove staples or paperclips. Shredding can be done in front of you while you wait and all containers can be returned.For more information, please contact 908-203-6080

The first 2013 Operation Secure Shred event will be hosted by Somerset County on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Somerset County South County Public Works Garage in Hillsborough. Additional events will be hosted at municipal sites, in cooperation with Somerset County. All events will be held on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. Plastics - Plastics #1 - #7 Recycling Guidance from Somerset County

Used Oil:
The following will accept waste oil in our area. Call before you go to make sure they are open and accepting oil at this time.

-Montgomery Township Municipal Garage (during container facility open days). A five (5) gallon limit per visit. Oil only - no filters or antifreeze.

-Car Parts on Amwell Road (908) 874-7550, Hapi Auto Parts on Amwell Road (908) 359-2300, or STS Car Service Center, Route 206 (609) 921-8200

-Somerset County Recycling Center (8:00 a.m.- noon, first Saturday of each month). The County will also accept filters and antifreeze.

Used Tires may be dropped off on the first Saturday of the month at the County Recycling Center at 40 Polhemus Lane in Bridgewater from 8:00 a.m. until noon. There is an eight (8) tire maximum at any one time. There are also special tire recycling events at various locations throughout the year. PARKS AND BUILDINGS

With a staff of eight operators, two custodians, and one foreman, and using environmentally friendly alternatives to indiscriminate spraying of chemical pesticides for lawns, trees and shrubs, this division presently maintains approximately 90 acres of parklands. This includes six baseball fields, ten soccer fields, and ten playgrounds. The division also maintains operations and cleanliness of the municipally owned public buildings.

ROADS

This division employs ten operators and one foreman in the maintenance of drainage ditches and other drainage facilities around town, installing driveway inlets, roadside mowing, erection and removal of snow-fence, snow plowing, salting and anti-icing and patching of roads, and other general maintenance of the roadways. The division presently maintains approximately 135 miles of roadway.

Please first identify if the road is maintained by Montgomery Township or the State of New Jersey or Somerset County:

Route 206 is a New Jersey State Highway maintained by the NJ Dept. of Transportation.

Somerset County Roads

Any main roads in Montgomery, excluding Rt. 206, associated with a route number are maintained by Somerset County. These include Dutchtown-Harlingen Rd. (Rt. 604), Belle Mead-Blawenburg Rd aka The Great Rd. (Rt. 601), Georgetown-Franklin Turnpike (Rt. 518), River Rd. (Rt. 533), and Kingston-River Rd. (Rt. 605).

For Township Maintained Public Roads Only....

Montgomery Township has a Pothole Hotline so that residents can report pothole problems in the Township directly to road foreman Joe Kane.

The Montgomery Township Pothole Hotline number is 908-874-8947.

Pothole hotline calls are recorded every day and monitored Monday through Friday. If you wish to report a pothole on the weekend, please leave the information on the hotline unless you feel it warrants an emergency and requires immediate attention. If the pothole presents an immediate hazard, residents should contact the Montgomery Township Police Department at 908-359-3222. Resident reports are appreciated as they help township crews be aware of and correct problem situations.

SEWER DIVISION

The sewer division now has eight (8) operators, a laboratory supervisor and a Chief Operator. We maintain eight (8) advanced wastewater treatment facilities and nine (9) sewage pumping stations. We are responsible for fifty-six (56) miles sewer lines. These operators are charged with meeting some of the most restrictive discharge limits in New Jersey for non-trout streams. The laboratory is certified for some of the compliance testing. The sewer utility relies on contractors for some lab testing, maintenance and excavation.
